  • Research and Development

At Concept Joinery we are constantly involved in research and development, including in-house testing and developing of new products, finishes and techniques. We see this ongoing professional development as an essential part of our business because we put our expertise and research experience into the client’s product. Research and development also allows us to remain at the cutting edge of the joinery industry.

All works we undertake are guaranteed by the Institute of Carpenters (I.O.C.). Membership of this prestigious professional body means that we are kept up to date with the latest developments in the industry, and that we have a network of contacts from whom to source the best possible products for our clients’ needs. Indeed, Les is the Vice-Chairman of the Jersey Instutute of Carpenters, and invigilates and marks the I.O.C. exams taken in the island. All of this experience and expertise are brought to each individual project we undertake.

    Case Study - Wood Coatings

A recent example of our research and development work being used on a client’s project is in wood coatings. The client wanted a window frame constructed with a UV-protective coating that would give a natural appearance to the wood underneath for years to come. Working closely with our suppliers, we sourced a number of products to test and compare for colour, durability and overall quality.

    Test coatings.

To test the coatings in real-world conditions, we constructed a test rig of sample timber pieces, each with a different coating product, and placed it on the roof of our workshop. After a period of time we assessed the results and found the product with the best finish to use on the client’s window frame.

This is an ongoing project and we are continuing to monitor the durability of the products used on the test rig over time. We also continue to test new products as they arrive on the market.
